How the 48 teams are organized

The 48 qualified nations are split into 12 groups of four, labelled A through L. Each team plays the other three in its group once, and the top two of every group advance automatically. On top of that, the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also reach the new Round of 32, so 32 of the 48 teams survive the group stage. That format gives almost every nation on this page a realistic path forward, and it makes goal difference matter from the very first whistle.

Hosts and confederations

The tournament is co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, and all three host nations qualify automatically. The rest of the field comes through the six confederations โ€” UEFA (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America), CONCACAF (North and Central America), CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia) and the OFC (Oceania) โ€” which is why the group stage throws together such different styles of play. From the group stage to the final

Every team on this page begins in the group stage, playing three matches against the others in its group. The 32 teams that come through โ€” the top two of each group plus the eight best third-placed sides โ€” move into a single-elimination bracket that runs from the new Round of 32 through the Round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium near New York. The deeper a team goes, the more matches it plays, so a run to the final means seven knockout-stage games on top of the group fixtures.
