The United States could not have dreamed of a better start, thrashing Paraguay 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and sending a message to the rest of the World Cup. In front of more than 70,000 fans, almost all in red, white and blue, Mauricio Pochettino's side dominated from first whistle to last.
The opener came early. In the 7th minute, Christian Pulisic's pressure forced a Damián Bobadilla own goal that settled the hosts' nerves. Then the man of the night took over: Folarin Balogun, the Arsenal-developed striker, scored twice before the break (31' and in first-half stoppage time) to become the first American with two goals in a World Cup match since 1930.
Paraguay, who had the best defensive record in South American qualifying and beat both Brazil and Argentina along the way, pulled one back through Mauricio in the 73rd. But the night belonged to the hosts: Gio Reyna curled in a stunning fourth in the 98th minute. It was the first time in the USMNT's 96-year history that they scored four goals in a World Cup match.
"That is what we were waiting for," Pochettino said of the atmosphere. The co-hosts, brimming with confidence, play again on June 18.
